  • Yuri Berns

Yuri Berns is the senior winemaker at Sittella Wines in the Swan Valley – a family estate founded by his parents Simon and Maaike in 1993 – where he has been building a sparkling wine program of genuine ambition alongside a range of still wines sourced from the Swan Valley, Margaret River and Pemberton. The flagship Grand Vintage ‘Marie Christien Lugten’ – a Pemberton pinot noir and chardonnay traditional-method sparkling wine aged for a minimum of 36 months in bottle – has become the label’s prestige statement, while a new estate-planted albariño block in the Swan Valley signals where Berns believes the region’s future lies. A fifth-generation Western Australian with a Champagne obsession and a long-term commitment to soil health and climate adaptation, Berns is quietly making one of the most considered cases for the Swan Valley as a fine wine region.

  • Tom Daniel

Tom Daniel’s Chouette is a tribute to the Swan Valley – past, present and future. Working primarily with grenache and chenin blanc – the local heroes – he is seeking to preserve the heritage and the precious resource of old vines, while making styles that are distinctly modern. Bright and light to midweight, and with no additions, excepting a little sulphur, Daniel is busily sketching out a new future for the Swan with wines that are more suited to drinking in the hot local climate, and which are being eagerly taken up by Perth wine bars and restaurants that have historically shunned the region’s wines.

  • Alexi Christidis

Alexi Christidis named his label Chalari, meaning ‘relaxed’ in Greek, as part homage to his father and part mission statement for making unforced wines unbound by convention. From the origins of a ‘garage-like’ setup in the Perth Hills, Christidis now has a micro winery in Mount Barker, in the Great Southern, sourcing fruit from the Swan Valley and Frankland River, amongst other regions – with the range now spanning quite the gamut: from pinot noir, tempranillo and mataro, to riesling, to a lightly sparkling rosĂ©, a pĂ©t-nat made from chenin blanc and skin-contact expressions of vermentino and viognier, while the tribute to his father continues with a take on Retsina made from Swan Valley chenin blanc resinated with Greek pine sap.

  • Rhys Parker & Paul Hoffman

Rhys Parker and his best mate, Paul Hoffman, have had remarkably similar career paths. The pair grew up as neighbours, both filling in pocket money gaps with work at Paul’s parents’ winery in the Swan Valley, a wild and semi-abandoned affair that Paul’s dad, Peter, bought in 1986 and pulled back from the brink. Although…

  • Genevieve & Rob Mann

The Mann name is somewhat of a significant one in Australian wine circles. In fact, it’s about as a storied a moniker as there is, up there with Schubert and O’Shea. Jack Mann’s most famous creation, the game-changing Houghton’s White Burgundy was an enduring classic, which he made for 51 consecutive vintages. And while that…
