A former diesel machine shop tucked away in Albion, an inner-northern suburb of Brisbane, has gained a fresh lease of life as Wineism, thanks to Ian and Liz Trinkle’s bold vision for a very different type of wine shop and tasting lounge.
“As a former sommelier in restaurants, I wanted a change, to have more of a focus on selling and retailing great wine,” says Ian. The couple believed that such a change demanded a striking location, which inspired a very different look for Wineism.
While refrigerated cabinets and open metal racks line opposing walls, a vast, dark-tiled tasting bench provides a spacious central focus to the room, flanked by elegant high stools upholstered in black leather. Floor-to-ceiling gauze drapes soften the light, offsetting charcoal-coloured walls and black metal trim to the fixtures. It looks more a sophisticated hotel lounge than a retail shop.
The Trinkles worked with Troupe Studio to create such an elegant space. “We did all the design and project managed the build in 2021,” says Liz, “and in fact we had to do it twice, because the area was flooded after a month.”
Designing such a lavish interior was intended to create a welcoming environment that takes customers on a wine journey that is educational, immersive and unique.
“While we don’t have a wine list, we are a retail wine shop with the ability to pour wine for customers on premise, and we have about 800 different wines available,” says Ian, noting that customers can try and buy in-store, pick up orders or shop online for home delivery.
“We have a steady flow of new releases and I’m keen to share my knowledge with tips for our customers. I want them to think of me as their friendly and welcoming neighbourhood sommelier.”
Wineism also has a dedicated classroom and function space called the Albarium Room. Ian is an accredited teacher who hosts tutored tastings, seasonal releases, spotlight tastings on particular regions and styles, and introduces special guest speakers. Wineism also conducts Bacchus Academy Masterclasses and globally-recognised WSET courses for Level 1 to 3 Awards in wines and Level 1 and 2 Awards in spirits, for professionals and enthusiasts.
“We’ve put our heart and soul into this business and have been fortunate to have tremendous support from the community,” says Liz. “It’s a shop where everyone is welcome to pop in for a glass of wine and a snack – just something simple, like charcuterie, cheeses or anchovies. It all enhances the experience.”
