Hither & Yon have been making a significant splash growing and making wine from heat-tolerant grape varieties that suit the Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale. Made from the great southern Italian grape Aglianico, this copper-coloured rosé is laced with wild red berries, tart apple and orange peel, finishing dry, savoury and moreish.

Tasting note

Pale hue in the onion skin zone, a coppery russet vibe, this opens with subtle aromas of ripening wild berries and red apple laced with orange peel and a savoury mineral overlay. This wine isn’t about obvious fruit flavours, though there’s plenty going on. A pithy, mineral and savoury feel drives the palate, with plenty of texture and volume through the dry carry. You can really feel the bones of a variety that typically makes intense and mineral red wine, but this emphasises the vibrant and delicious side of the grape, with the classic savouriness intertwined but never overpowering.

Rosé

From its spiritual home in Provence, in southern France, rosé can be both democratically affordable and dizzyingly expensive, but it rarely slips into the sordid or gets hung up on being too serious. It maintains a broad welcoming smile. It says, drink me. It says, relax, have fun. Those bottles of rosy-tinged sunshine have been exported to all corners of the globe in their legion, and they have found their mark, fashioning the expectations of drinkers and shaping the decisions of winemakers. Today, Australian rosé has grown up, with wines that can both be deliciously frivolous, built for sunshine and good times, as well as having a more serious side, emphasising detail and nuance, and made to pair with food.

Aglianico

Aglianico is the noble grape of southern Italy. Though often compared to nebbiolo for its power and structure, it has its own distinct personality, and while it has been slow to take off, aglianico’s prospects of performing well in Australian conditions are very bright indeed. Aglianico is a variety that can have leathery, earthy, ferrous and smoky notes, but it’s one that can also show pretty red florals and small red berry fruit notes. It’s also a variety that can be both quite acidic and tannic, while reaching relatively high ripeness and alcohol levels.

McLaren Vale

While it couldn’t feel any more removed from city life, the McLaren Vale wine region is inside Adelaide’s metropolitan area. And although the township itself is only 40 minutes by car from central Adelaide and vineyards brush up against ever-encroaching housing, McLaren Vale remains unaffected by the urban sprawl. Muscat blanc is not exactly in fashion as a dry table wine, but when made by Hither & Yon’s Richard Leask you’d have to wonder why it’s not in our glasses more often. Picked early to retain freshness, this has some classic floral and talc notes of the variety, but it’s uber-fresh and savoury, light-bodied, tangy and built for thirst-slaking refreshment.

Tasting note

Pale in colour and brisk in profile, this has characteristic exotic perfume that is a feature of muscat varieties, but it’s savoury and taut with it, some green apple, jasmine, with a waft of sea spray underpinning. This is dry and tight, but not mean, with some mandarin peel and orange oil notes, a little pleasantly snappy almost-bitter finish – in a good way – that whips it even further into bright aperitif and food-friendly territory.

Muscat

The muscat grape comes in many forms – some related by name alone – but with all being quite exotically aromatic. Much of it is destined for fortified or sweet wine production, with the typical talc and exotically floral notes unfashionable for dry table wines – though there are some compelling exceptions to this. Emulations of Northern Italy’s Moscato d’Asti have seen the muscat family brought somewhat back into currency in this country, sometimes using the typical muscat blanc à petits grains (moscato bianco) and sometimes other muscat varieties or similarly aromatic ones. Muscat rouge à petits grains (with red-hued berries) is the sole variety used in the production of Rutherglen muscat, one of this country’s greatest wines.

Tasting note

Lifted and tightly packed nose of wild forest berries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberry, with dark herbal notes, tar and black spices. The palate is intense but linear, with a super-bright line of acidity, making this racy and tight but with an appealing wildness, a kick of tart mulberries carrying the just scraping medium-weight wine through a zippy and flavourful finish.

Hailing from Spain, carignan may yet find a more significant home in Australia, with retaining acidity very well and thriving in hot and dry conditions – a combination that we don’t lack for.
